Simple Build

After glueing all the doublers to the inside of the fuselage sides, it was time to bring the two halves together with the formers F3, F4 & F5 in place. For this job, I have a length of aluminium angle that I use for marking out and cutting against. It also makes for a great straight edge to clamp things against, keeping everything nice and straight. Of course, you can use a normal jig like the SLEC Building Gig for this job.

Once the glue had set and the clamps had been removed, the push rod tubes were slid through and out of the rear exit slots before glueing the top and bottom fuselage sheeting and sanding to shape. The wing nylon nut was glued to the underside of FO8, and test-fitted, but not glued until the wing was built for correct bolt alignment.

Wing Built In 3 Parts

This is a quick wing to build and is all done in the traditional way over the plans. This is the centre section done with the capping strips over the ribs and a centre sheet over the two centre ribs. A single wing dowel is fitted into the centre of the leading edge, and two slots are cut by the spar ends to allow the wing tip braces to be glued into place.

Wing Tips Built Over Plans

The wing tips are done exactly the same way as the centre section. The plan only provides one side wing tip, so you either need to do a copy in mirror image or glue the first section in place as shown without the ribs on!, then remove and flip over, line up the front sheeting on the plan and fit the wing tip spar. The ribs can then be glued in place and the rest of the sheeting fitted. There is a great YouTube build video explaining all this, and I will link it in below.

Ready to Cover

Wing tips glued into place and a light final sand, and it's ready to cover.

For this, I decided to use Solarfilm Supershrink-Polyester, as Oracover is very expensive, and I had been told by some trusted flying club friends that they had used it and it was good. So I got some and I wasn't disappointed, it went on easily, was very forgiving, and the finish was fantastic!
